Dear Apex Social Team,
My name is Melissa, and I am a social worker and Apex Care Professional from Germany. In 2024, I had the privilege of joining the August family. What began as a professional opportunity became one of the most transformative chapters of my life. Moving to the United States meant leaving behind my language, routines, and professional environment to step into an entirely new world. I arrived motivated and prepared, yet I also had quiet fears. Would I meet expectations? Would I understand the family dynamics? Would I truly belong?
From day one, the August family answered those questions with more than just welcoming words; they backed up their hospitality with consistent action. They embraced me not just as a caregiver from abroad, but as Melissa – a professional whose voice mattered. They asked about my training as a social worker, valued my perspective, and entrusted me with meaningful responsibilities. Their trust gave me confidence when everything felt new, allowing me to step into my role with strength instead of hesitation.
Their home is often busy and sometimes loud, but it is always filled with intention. Raising three children with special needs requires patience, structure, and emotional strength. What moves me most is how they approach this responsibility each day. They don’t measure their children by what’s difficult; they measure progress by effort, courage, and growth. I remember one afternoon when one of the children completed a daily task independently after months of practice. To an outsider, it may have seemed insignificant, but in that moment, it felt enormous. Instead of continuing with the routine, the parents stopped. They knelt down, smiled with genuine pride, and celebrated not only the result, but also the persistence behind it. I could see how deeply they believed in their child.Â
Standing there, I realized that empowerment is neither loud nor dramatic. It’s consistent encouragement, patience on hard days, and deciding to see ability where others might see limitations. In their home, inclusion isn’t just a principle on paper – it’s something you feel in the way they speak, guide, and believe.
This spirit of empowerment extends beyond their children and directly influences the way they support me. They communicate expectations clearly, provide honest yet constructive feedback, and collaborate with me in a manner that is built on mutual respect. Together, we reflect, set goals, and navigate challenges. I have never felt reduced to “help”; I have always felt valued as a professional. This environment has strengthened my clinical thinking, leadership skills, and resilience.Â
At the same time, I am completing my master’s degree while working full-time. Balancing academic demands with caregiving responsibilities is challenging, but the August family intentionally protects my study time. They encourage the children to respect quiet hours and support my academic deadlines with thoughtful gestures – a cup of coffee placed beside my laptop, kind words before an exam, and understanding when I need to focus. These moments show that they believe in my future.
There were days when adjusting to a new country and new responsibilities felt overwhelming. On those days, their steady reassurance grounded me. They reminded me of my strengths when I doubted them, and they made me feel seen, respected, and capable.Â
Cultural exchange in their home is genuine and ongoing. They include me in family traditions, school events, holidays, and everyday life while embracing the German customs and perspectives I bring to their home. Their generosity extends even further, though.
Over the years, they have repeatedly opened their doors to other Apex Care Professionals – not just for a short visit, but whenever someone needed support, connection, or simply a place to feel welcome. Whether for a weekend, a holiday, or a longer stay, their home has always been open. They make sure that no care professional feels alone, especially during significant moments like Thanksgiving or Christmas. Their hospitality is not occasional, but rather a consistent expression of their belief in community and inclusion. They don’t just participate in cultural exchange – they actively create it.
The August family doesn’t just align with Apex’s mission – they embody it. They empower children of all abilities and uplift care professionals through respect, growth, and shared purpose. Because of them, I am a stronger social worker and a more confident and compassionate person. Their impact will endure long after this chapter ends. If empowerment means helping someone believe in their own strength, then the August family has empowered not only their children, but also me.
For these reasons, I nominate the August family wholeheartedly for the 2026 Apex Host Family of the Year Award.
