My name is Luisa, I am an Apex Care Professional and trained Social Worker and Occupational Therapist from Germany. I am honored to nominate my Host Family for the Apex Host Family of the Year award. This family has made my stay in the US unforgettable so far. Their support, warmth, humor and active engagement have allowed me to grow personally, professionally and culturally in ways I could never have imagined.
What makes this family truly exceptional is how each member brings unique strengths, energy, and personality to the household. Julian is a happy, charismatic child who loves people and brings so much joy to every day. He is a true family person, incredibly inclusive, attentive and exploring the world with curiosity.
Sasha is a confident, intelligent and endlessly energetic girl. Her sense of humor and strong personality light up the house. Sasha’s creativity, athleticism, and enthusiasm bring so much excitement to the daily live. My Host Dad brings funny jokes, exciting conversations, energy and great ideas into the family. He supports me personally by suggesting ways to enjoy one of my favourite hobbies, hiking, here in the U.S. and gives fantastic recommendations for travel and local adventures. My Host Mom is a wonderful listener who genuinely ensures everyone in the family is doing well. She is patient, understanding, and consistently supportive, helping me feel confident and appreciated while also making me feel fully included as a family member.
Completing this vibrant household is their Dachshund, Frankie, who adds even more life and joy to the family. From walks in the park to the memorable Dachshund Festival in Washington Square Park, Frankie brings the family together.
Another person who enriches my daily life in the family is our nanny, Maria. We coordinate with each other, work as a team, and learn from one another to provide the best possible support for the children. I can learn a lot from her, and we also help each other out and make everyday life easier by working with ease and good communication.
This family shows genuine interest and care for my well-being, asking about my day, my plans, and how I feel. Their consistent appreciation and support make me feel seen and respected. This family fully integrates me into their lives filled with exciting activities. Weather going apple-picking, visiting NYC (e.g. Radio City Hall, Madison Square garden), exploring the botanical garden or visiting local restaurants. I love following Sasha’s basketball games or playing the family board game “Sorry”. These shared moments allow me to feel like a true part of the family rather than just a caregiver. Traveling with the family outside the daily routine has been particularly meaningful. These experiences—jumping off the raft into cold water, swimming in the pool, playing games during meals, or solving riddles together on vacation—have strengthened our bond and created lasting memories.
Beyond personal growth, my Host Family has provided me with extraordinary professional opportunities. I participate in speech therapy, ABA therapy, and physical therapy sessions, which allows me to expand my professional skills and knowledge. The interdisciplinary exchange helps me deliver comprehensive care at home and provides me with confidence in my therapeutic practice. The children in the family are strong-willed and articulate, which allows me to improve my English communication skills through discussions with them. Clear, open communication with my Host Parents has also been invaluable. Direct, thoughtful feedback and guidance, helping me adapt to cultural differences.
I deeply appreciate being included in important cultural and religious moments, such as Jewish holidays like Hanukkah, where we light candles, sing together, and share meaningful meals. Participating in Thanksgiving preparations, Halloween celebrations, and local traditions has allowed me to experience American culture in an authentic and immersive way.
Our shared interests have created many special bonding moments. Following the Rangers together on TV, talking about Broadway shows and music and especially enjoying food together have been experiences that have brought us closer and taught me how to make American specialties like Rice Krispie treats or cornbread.
The family creates an environment where everyone’s strengths are celebrated and embodies Apex’s mission to empower children of all abilities and make the world more inclusive. They are active, energetic, and engaged, creating a lively household full of laughter, curiosity, and learning. From outdoor adventures to shared meals and games, they have built a home where I feel included, appreciated, and supported. Together, we work as a team to encourage independence and growth for the children while creating joyful, shared experiences that strengthen our bonds. I am incredibly grateful for their generosity, support and warmth and it is a privilege to nominate them for this award.
