My name is Alina, and I am an Apex Care Professional and trained Occupational Therapist from Germany. I joined this program and came to the United States with the goal of supporting children with special needs within their families and natural environment, helping them grow and develop independence but also bonding with a family, collecting memories, learning from a new culture and community. And after 8 months I can say that with my host family it is much more than a professional experience – I found a place that truly feels like home. That is one of the reasons I would like to nominate the Roman family as host family of the year!
When I first arrived in Estes Park, Jodi welcomed me with the words, “Welcome home! We’re so glad you’re here!” That moment has stayed with me ever since. It was the very beginning of my journey with the Roman family, and it immediately made me feel valued and included.
Now, eight months later, I can truly say that Estes Park feels like home and the Romans feel like family. My host family actually consists of two households that come together as one big, supportive family. On the one hand I live with Clara, Jodi (Clara’s mom) and her partner J Matthew and on the other hand I fortunately also get to spend time with Clara’s dad Rio, his partner Jen and her kids Charlotte and Boden. It is very special to me that everyone is so close and works as one team surrounding Clara with lots of love and happiness. Everyone on “Team Clara” plays an important role in supporting her growth, happiness and independence, and I’m very grateful to be part of it.
My host family is an awesome example of how empowerment of children with special needs could look like! Clara is surrounded by encouragement and so many opportunities to participate fully in life and her community. Her parents include her in so many activities such as skiing, basketball games, concerts, climbing, bike rides, … They always encourage her to explore and try new things. For me, their dedication and positivity show me how inclusion should really be pursued in everyday life.
At the same time, my host family has been incredibly supportive of my own growth—both professionally and personally. They respect my professional training and value my ideas when it comes to supporting Clara. Whether it’s adapting activities, suggesting strategies, or sharing observations, they listen to my perspective and treat me as an important part of the care team. I really appreciate that they also provide clear communication, helpful feedback, and encouragement, which creates a very positive and supportive working environment.
Besides work, my host family always supported my personal aspirations and goals as well. Whether it’s connecting with friends and becoming part of the community, planning adventures, when I need someone to talk to or advice, I can count on them, which is special and meaningful to me. They have also made a big effort to include me in American life and culture. From family activities and holidays to community events, they make sure I can be part of it, if I wanted to. They have introduced me to so many special experiences and have encouraged me to explore and enjoy new adventures. What makes this family truly exceptional is that they have created an environment where I can be myself. I feel respected, appreciated, and supported not only as a professional but also as an individual. After eight months, it feels like we have known each other much longer because of all the memories we have shared.
A special thanks goes to Clara! She is such a joy to be around. I am incredibly grateful for all the little moments we share—laughing together, reading stories, doing activities, snuggles, and having our little chats before bedtime. These everyday moments are what make this experience so meaningful. Clara brings so much joy and personality into every day, and it is a privilege to be part of her life. I truly enjoy working with her, supporting her growth and development, and being a companion for a small but meaningful part of her life.
