My name is Sophia, and I am a physical therapist from Germany. I have been a CP in the US since September 2024. I fell in love with my host family in New Jersey because I found a home full of love, care, fun, surprises, challenges, excitement, and truly golden hearts. I quickly learned that my host family never gives up. No matter what happens, they face it together—and I am so happy to say that “together” includes me.
At first, I was nervous about being far from home, in a new country, with a family I had only met through video calls. But very soon, I realized there was nothing to worry about. It became the greatest and most wonderful adventure of my life.
From day one, my host family showed me what it means to have a strong relationship built on trust and respect. They live by a growth mindset. They model resilience and openness, welcome mistakes, and reflect as a family. This creates a home where everyone feels safe to try, fail, and grow. Challenges are not seen as obstacles but as opportunities to learn, adapt, and improve—we are always “failing forward.”
Every day they inspire me with positivity and gratitude. They always find something to be thankful for—small successes, family meals, meaningful conversations, or simply spending time together. Even during stressful times, they choose optimism, which creates a warm, supportive atmosphere.
They show love not only with words but through thoughtful actions. They buy my favorite ice cream, invite me to sports games and school events, include me in family celebrations, or simply give me good-morning and good-night hugs. These gestures make everyone feel important, seen, and valued. It makes me so proud to be part of this family.
One of their greatest strengths is bringing out the best in others. They see their children’s talents and help them grow with patience and love. They support their interests while encouraging new experiences. Whether it is cheerleading, basketball, baseball, football, cross-country, schoolwork, or community activities, they support each child in their own special way.
Over the last year and a half, I have seen so much growth—not only physically, but also emotionally and personally. The joy and smiles of my host kids make me happy—their beautiful smiles are the highlight of my day. I love them all, and everyone makes me feel special in their own way. Opie once carefully chose a necklace with a real shark tooth for me from Florida. CJ shows how simple things can bring happiness—one evening, I was making burgers and he was so thankful and excited. Debbie often comes up with ideas for matching outfits like real sisters. Another special moment that I will never forget was when Annie, who has cerebral palsy, began taking her first independent steps. Doctors once said she might never walk. Seeing her take those steps, and the proud, emotional look on her parents’ faces, made me incredibly happy. It was a beautiful reminder of what love, patience, and faith can achieve.
I also want to recognize the incredible parents and their beautiful marriage. Chris and Lisa make this family so special. They opened their home and hearts to me. They did not just welcome me—they truly share their family and make me feel comfortable, supported, and valued every day. They show their children what belief, determination, and unconditional love look like. They lead by example, modeling kindness, patience, and resilience, and they are intentional about creating meaningful family moments. Their generosity, warmth, and trust make me feel part of the family, and I am deeply grateful for their love and guidance.
They believe that unlocking children’s potential is something everyone contributes to. They talk openly, listen carefully, and make decisions based on trust and respect. When problems arise, they address them calmly and work together to find solutions. They focus on solutions instead of problems, teaching their children to think creatively, stay flexible, and never give up.
Living with them has changed me. They have helped me grow personally and professionally, supported my goals, encouraged my independence, and helped me believe in myself. They showed me that empowerment starts with believing in, loving, and trusting yourself and others.
In everything they do, my host family demonstrates a growth mindset, empowerment, trust, connection, respect, and dignity. Their home is a place where dreams are supported, strengths are discovered, and love is shared every day.
For all these reasons, I truly believe they deserve this nomination. They are not just my host family—they have become my second family in another country. They have made a lasting impact on my life, and I know they will continue to positively shape the lives of everyone who becomes part of their world. Their love will stay with me for a lifetime.
