This family consistently embodies Apex’s mission by creating an inclusive and supportive environment that prioritizes both Gavin’s development and my growth as a care professional. As parents of a six-year-old child with autism and an 11-year-old daughter, they demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring that both children are supported equally and included in everyday activities whenever possible. They thoughtfully plan activities around Gavin’s needs so he can participate alongside others, while also giving their daughter the attention and guidance she needs. They are always well prepared—for example, by keeping an emergency bag with everything Gavin might need when we are out.
From the beginning, they invested significant time in training me thoroughly, explaining Gavin’s routines, therapies, and strategies that help him succeed. Even now, communication is seamless and highly supportive. They respond to questions quickly, provide regular updates, and we often sit down together to discuss what approaches might work best for Gavin. They also include me in important aspects of his care, such as communicating with his teacher and attending medical appointments, which has deepened my understanding of collaboration between families, educators, and healthcare providers.
Living and working with this family has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally in many meaningful ways. They place a great deal of trust in me and regularly express appreciation for my work, which has strengthened my confidence. I am included in new therapies and appointments as they arise, giving me continuous opportunities to develop my caregiving skills. Beyond daily routines, they include me in experiences like trips to Puerto Rico and snowboarding adventures, which allow me to observe and support Gavin in different environments and strengthen our bond.
They also strongly support cultural exchange, which is central to the Apex program. They actively include me in American traditions, holidays, and activities, explaining customs and sharing new experiences, while also showing genuine interest in my culture and family. This mutual exchange creates a warm, respectful environment where I feel valued both professionally and personally.
At home, they have created a very positive and supportive environment. I have my own room and bathroom, access to my own car, and the freedom to invite friends over. They are very flexible, easygoing, and non-judgmental, which allows me to maintain independence while feeling fully included. Meals together and open conversations about our day make communication natural and collaborative, and their approach ensures a healthy balance between work, personal growth, and community life. I have also met many members of their extended family, which helped me feel welcomed and included from the beginning.
Overall, this family has created an environment that combines support, trust, and inclusion. They check in on me regularly, ask if I need anything, and provide guidance when necessary, while also giving me freedom to handle responsibilities on my own. Their openness, positivity, and flexibility make their home a wonderful place to live and work. Through thoughtful planning, consistent communication, and shared experiences, they empower both Gavin and their daughter to thrive while supporting my personal and professional growth as an Apex Care Professional.
