Texas, USA
Hi, my name is Jessica, and I am a physical therapist from Germany. I came to the United States in October to start a new chapter in my life and to experience something completely different from what I have known back home.
When you move so far away, you leave behind not only your routines and comfort zone but also the people who have always been there for you – Your family, your friends, and everything familiar. Starting over in a new country can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. That’s why having the right host family means so much more than simply having a place to stay.
From the start, John and Nicole made it clear I was more than someone living in their house. They welcomed me into their family in a way that felt natural, warm, and genuine. What I appreciate most is that our relationship has never felt like a job or an arrangement. It truly feels like family.
Their home has become a safe place for me. It is filled with laughter, honesty, and support. No matter what kind of day I am having, I know I can always count on them. We talk openly, support each other, and face things together. That ability to rely on the people around you is incredibly special, especially when you are far from your own family.
John and Nicole make a real effort to include me in every part of family life. They show me every day that I belong here – not because I have a role to fulfill, but because they truly want me to be part of their family. They value my presence, invite me to spend time with them, and make sure I feel comfortable being myself. That kind of openness and trust cannot be forced. It comes from genuine care.
They include me in family activities and special moments; On weekends, we spend time together and do things as a family. During the Christmas season especially, we shared many special moments, and we even completed a family run together. These experiences have made me feel truly included and have created memories I will never forget.
Even in the evenings, after the children are in bed, we often spend time together instead of going our separate ways. We watch a TV show, talk, laugh, and simply enjoy each other’s company. It is these small everyday moments that make their home feel like a true family, not just a place to stay.
Their children, Asher and Rory, are such a big part of why this family feels so special to me. Asher is six and Rory is four, and both of them bring so much love into my everyday life. They are affectionate, kind, and full of joy. The love they give so freely – the hugs, the laughter, and the small moments – means more to me than they will probably ever know. Being with them does not feel like a responsibility. It is something I truly cherish every day.
Another reason this family means so much to me is that I have learned a lot through my everyday life with them. As a physical therapist, it’s special go see therapy not just as a profession but woven into daily family life.
Being part of this family has also allowed me to witness Asher’s journey and development in a very meaningful way. Since I have arrived in October, I’ve watched him grow and progress. When I first arrived he used a walker. Now he is able to walk with crutches and has gained so much more confidence and independence.
Furthermore, Asher completed an intensive therapy program, and accompanying him through parts of this journey has been very special. Seeing his strength and determination has been truly inspiring, and I feel grateful to have experienced this alongside the family.
What stands out most about John and Nicole as host parents is how much they genuinely care. Not just that the placement goes well, but about how I am doing as a person. They support and encourage me, give me space to grow, and always make sure I feel safe and appreciated.
Even though my own family is far away, I never feel alone here. I have found a second family that truly feels like home. I love spending time with them, sharing everyday moments, and being part of their lives. This feeling of belonging is something I will carry with me long after this experience ends.
John and Nicole, together with Asher and Rory, represent everything a host family should be: loving, supportive, open-hearted, and genuine. They have given me so much more than a place to stay. They have given me a family.
For all these reasons, I truly believe they deserve to be named Host Family of the Year.
I want to let the pictures speak for themselves. They show how comfortable I feel, how much love I have found here, and how I have truly gained a second family far away from home.
