Inclusion Matters by Shane’s Inspiration
Forging Pathways of Equity for Children with Disabilities
Inclusion Matters by Shane’s Inspiration is an international non-profit organization that focuses on making sure kids with disabilities can play together with dignity. They create playgrounds where all kids, no matter their abilities, can join in. These playgrounds are designed to be accessible to everyone, so every child can have fun and play together.
In addition to building playgrounds, Inclusion Matters by Shane’s Inspiration runs educational programs. These programs teach communities about including all children, no matter their abilities. They aim to connect children with and without disabilities, promoting understanding and friendship. By supporting inclusive play and education, the organization works towards a future where every child feels accepted and valued.
Powerful life of Shane Alexander Williams
Shane was born in 1997 with spinal muscular atrophy and passed away two weeks later. His parents, Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams, deeply mourned his loss. They wanted to honor Shane’s life by creating something meaningful. Realizing that Shane’s disability would have prevented him from ever playing on a playground, they noted the lack of truly accessible playgrounds in the Western United States at that time.
Catherine, Scott, and their friend Tiffany Harris were determined to make a difference. They gathered support from council members and the Department of Recreation and Parks in Los Angeles. The department gave them land in Griffith Park. In 2000, they opened “Shane’s Inspiration Playground,” the first playground in the western United States where everyone could play together. This started a movement. Families all over the country wanted playgrounds like this in their neighborhoods.
Shane’s short life inspired a worldwide movement for inclusive play that has made a big impact everywhere. Scott and Catherine are known around the world for promoting inclusion, and they’ve received awards for their charity work. But above all their achievements, they’re proudest of being Grace Alexandra’s parents, Shane’s younger sister.
